How Solar Works & Net Metering
The way solar systems work is pretty simple - they convert the sun's rays into usable electricity. There are solar panels which collect the light and turn it into 24 Volts which is then converted into the 120/240 Volts that is used as our household current and that electricity is pumped into our main utility electric supply.

Your Solar System will only produce electricity during the day when the sun is out, however, most people use most of their electricity at night when they come home from work, turning on lights, air conditioning, cooking and laundry. This is why "Net Metering" is used. During the day while you are away your solar panels will pump electricty back into the utility grid, causing your meter to run backward, creating a "credit" of energy that you can then use at night, when your meter will run forward again while you use up the electricity that you created during the day. If you create the same amount of electricity during the day that you use at night, your power bill from WAPA will "Net" out to zero energy usage, hence a $0 electric bill. If you generate more electricity than you use, WAPA will not pay you for this excess power, therefore most solar systems are designed to generate slightly less electricity than you use which will "almost" wipe out your electric bill, but not provide more power than you need.
